MJ Lenderman and the Sum of Their Parts
When MJ Lenderman and the band walked onto the stage, I suddenly felt like the audience had perhaps awoken them from a long nap. However, once they started playing, I immediately recognized the full pedigree of influences. It's a great list—Uncle Tupelo comes to mind first. Then, of course, there’s Pavement, early Wilco (especially the drumming), and rounding out my list…Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. All great bands.
The show started as a slow burn, smoldering with hints of flame. It then built to a full-throated conclusion that felt more like an emotional catharsis than the end of a performance. The audience knew every word. All those who attended were baptized and sent forth to spread the word. If you haven’t heard of Lenderman, jump in soon. They sold out the Franklin Music Hall, topping out at 2,000 in the audience. Next time they tour this area, it will be in much bigger venues.
